DID LOCKDOWNS INCREASE
VIOLENCE AND FEMICIDES?
Did the long lockdowns imposed for health reasons trigger the spike in violence?
Are they related to the increased incidents of femicide that have taken place recently?
Starting with the second question, I would say that it would be an exaggeration for anyone to attribute the increase in incidents of violence, especially fatal violence against women, to the lockdowns.
It is generally known that restrictive conditions provoke reactions on the part of the restricted.
Very few can actually accept and adapt to severe restrictions. It is to be expected that most will react to anything that restricts their freedom, self-determination and choices.
Some of them are expected to react and few of them may even use violence to express their reaction.
Some of those who will use violence will choose physical violence.
And even fewer of those who will choose physical violence to express their reaction, will target another person, on whom they will display violent behavior, to vent their resentment on that person.
A smaller percentage of them will choose a representative of the female gender to whom they will behave violently.
And there are perhaps even fewer who, by escalating the display of physical violence on their part, may act fatally towards a woman opposite them.
Speaking of incidents of violence, especially against women, I would like to make a few comments.
1. The person who would choose someone physically weaker than himself to be violent towards him, should be perceived by others as a person who both already feels weak and brazen.
2. Also, the increased numbers of such incidents that come to our attention may be related to the wide and rapid circulation of news in our time due to the increased number of available media.
3. As well as the awareness of many on the issues of violence plays an important role, resulting in high contagion of such news among most.
4. And let’s not forget that when people live restricted lives, they are quite likely to be attracted and strongly drawn to anything from the limited news and events going on around them.

Perhaps violence, in general, went down per capita specifically due to lockdowns and other forms of living in isolated states that would cause less social contact and interaction, while violence against east Asians went up per capita due to Trump rhetoric.
On the other hand, because of lock down, if you are talking about domestic violence against women… then yes, domestic violence against women probably went up due to longer hours staying together at home among spouses where anxiety and frustration over the pandemic can manifest itself as violence.
